Thick Film & Thin Film Microcircuits
Microcircuits, also known as integrated circuits (ICs) or microchips, are miniaturized electronic components that contain thousands to billions of transistors and other circuit elements. These circuits are etched or fabricated onto a small semiconductor wafer, typically made of silicon, using sophisticated microfabrication techniques. Thick Film Microcircuits:
- Manufacturing Process: Thick film microcircuits are fabricated using a screen-printing process. A thick film paste containing conductive, resistive, and dielectric materials is deposited on a ceramic substrate using a screen or stencil. The substrate is then fired at high temperatures to bond the thick film layers.
- Materials: The thick film paste typically consists of metal oxides such as ruthenium, palladium, and silver for conductors, glass or ceramics for dielectrics, and resistive materials like ruthenium dioxide or nichrome for resistors.

The thin film layers are precisely controlled to achieve desired electrical properties.
- Materials: Thin film microcircuits use high-purity materials such as metals (gold, aluminum, titanium), insulators (silicon dioxide, silicon nitride), and semiconductors (silicon, gallium arsenide).
- Manufacturing Process: Thin film microcircuits are fabricated using a physical vapor deposition (PVD) process, where thin layers of materials are deposited on a substrate using vacuum-based techniques like sputtering or evaporation. The thin film layers are precisely controlled to achieve desired electrical properties.
